For BTS, another milestone can sound almost routine. After the success the group has achieved in South Korea and the United States, a platinum certification in Italy might seem like one more entry in an already long list. What can recognition in a single country tell us about an act whose global popularity is firmly established?

The answer begins with Italy itself. Global fame and success in an individual market are related, but local language, listening habits, and homegrown artists still shape what people buy and stream.

The Italian platinum certification for BTS’s fifth studio album, ARIRANG, offers a closer look at that relationship. It gives the group’s international reach a specific local measure: an album meeting a sales-and-streaming threshold in a market where Italian music has a strong presence.

Global popularity meets a distinctly local music market

According to FIMI’s 2025 year-end report, Italian repertoire accounted for 85% of the annual Top 100 Albums, up from 69% in 2015. That figure describes the composition of the chart; it does not mean Italian music generated 85% of the country’s total music revenue.

Olly’s Tutta vita topped the annual album chart, followed by Sfera Ebbasta and Shiva’s Santana Money Gang and Geolier’s Dio lo sa. Understanding the market means recognizing these names alongside global pop stars.

International acts also have a substantial place in Italy. Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl finished second on the separate annual CD, vinyl, and cassette chart. The picture is one of international success coexisting with a strong local repertoire.

This context changes the question we ask about BTS. Alongside the group’s worldwide visibility, there is a more specific issue: how that visibility translates into purchases and streams within a market with its own established musical preferences.

What an Italian platinum certification actually measures

A platinum certification is a measure of recorded commercial activity. FIMI does not award it through a jury’s assessment of musical quality, and an artist’s international reputation cannot substitute for the required local results.

Under FIMI’s current thresholds, an album qualifies for platinum after exceeding 50,000 units, combining physical sales, downloads, and streaming equivalents. That does not mean 50,000 CDs or 50,000 individual listeners. The activity counted belongs to the Italian market.

The number alone also cannot establish whether certification is harder to achieve in Italy than elsewhere. Countries differ in market size and methodology. The useful point is that an album has met a local benchmark independently of its worldwide totals.

Albums and singles have different thresholds. Since the first week of 2025, a single has needed to exceed 200,000 units for platinum. FIMI raised its singles thresholds to reflect growing digital consumption, while leaving album thresholds unchanged. That singles revision should not be presented as an additional hurdle imposed on ARIRANG.

Why the word “album” matters for ARIRANG

FIMI lists ARIRANG as platinum in its Album and Compilation category for week 44 of 2026. On November 4, Yonhap, citing BigHit Music, reported that it was the first album by a K-pop act to achieve Italian platinum certification.

BTS Italy Platinum

The scope of that first matters. BTS had already earned double platinum in Italy for the single “Dynamite.” Describing this as the group’s first Italian platinum certification would overlook that earlier achievement.

The new milestone belongs to an album. A record of success for an individual song now sits alongside a platinum-certified album in the group’s Italian history.

An album certification does not establish that every track was equally popular or explain how buyers listened to the record. It establishes that the album’s combined eligible activity crossed the threshold. Even within those limits, it broadens the evidence available for understanding BTS’s presence in Italy beyond a signature hit.

What Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and Adele add to the picture

FIMI’s database contains a history of international albums building substantial consumption in Italy. These selected certification records provide context:

ArtistAlbumRecorded certification
Taylor SwiftLoverPlatinum — week 43, 2023
Harry StylesHarry StylesDouble platinum — week 22, 2022
Adele21Nine-times platinum — week 48, 2022

These are historical certification milestones, not a current sales ranking. The albums had different release dates and accumulation periods. Placing their certification levels beside BTS’s as a competitive scorecard would obscure those differences.

The records are useful because they show that international albums can build a substantial audience in Italy. Meanwhile, the same week-44 list that includes ARIRANG records five-times platinum for Geolier’s Tutto è possibile and four-times platinum for Annalisa’s E poi siamo finiti nel vortice. Local artists remain central to the picture.

BTS’s achievement belongs within this landscape: a Korean group’s album reaching platinum in a market that supports international stars while maintaining a powerful homegrown repertoire.

A more precise way to understand BTS’s global success

This certification cannot tell us how evenly BTS’s music has spread across Italian age groups, how much activity came from dedicated fans rather than casual listeners, or the exact balance between physical purchases and streaming.

What it does establish is still meaningful. An album by BTS met Italy’s local sales-and-streaming benchmark in a market where domestic music has a strong presence.

If achievements in the United States help illustrate the scale of BTS’s success, Italian platinum allows us to examine one part of that scale more closely. “Global popularity” contains many different listening environments, each with its own artists, habits, and routes to commercial success.

That is why ARIRANG going platinum in Italy deserves attention. The milestone is easy to pass over precisely because BTS is already so successful. Looking at the market behind it makes that familiar success more specific—and more revealing.
